IWC Portuguese

The IWC mentality is to provide engineering solutions to practical problems. In the late 1930s, two Portuguese businessmen requested that a watch be built that was accurate to marine chronometer grade and easily readable in tricky conditions. The IWC Portuguese was the solution to that very problem.

Hi Guys, I recently thought I would have browse in some of the London watch shops around Bond street in London. Most of the staff/owners I came across looked at me like a piece of gum on their shoe. One of the security staff was obviously summing me up to decided if he would even let me in, not being rude but he looked quite rough and ready himself. I speak well enough and was actually dressed well and look pretty normal, I could not believe how rude people were to me. Maybe they are all psychic and knew I don't have thousands to spend. But they cant me because my wife's friend went there recently to buy her husband a watch. You would not assume by looking at her clothes ect... but they are absolutely loaded and she could easily buy a few of their most expensive watches. She was made to feel so uncomfortable so she did not buy anything, her poop husband I am sure there are some very nice watch shops around and I know they must get fed up with time wastes., but some are horrible Freddy Junior   Posts: 52 Joined: Tue Aug 06, 2013 8:16 pm Top Reply with quote Re: Watch snobs by Lego » Sat Aug 24, 2013 1:30 pm

You know, there is a place where you can buy some quality watches online Seriously though, it is a pity that some stores seem to have this attitude about them. Buy one elsewhere then go back and show them what you bought and what they missed. I wouldn't give these people a second chance. If you talk to people who sell really expensive products such as high end boats or cars costing a minimum of many hundreds of thousands, they will tell you that it is impossible to assess whether a customer can afford the product by their appearance. Any sales person who does is rubbish at their job. Freddy, Unfortunately it happens. I had a similar experience when i first went to look an Explorer ii, the young (25) ish male sales asst at Upchurch jewellers in Colchester was giving me the same impression of that i couldn't afford it and should not have pressed the button on the door.( I couldn't really ) When i went back the second time after selling a few of my others (Now i could afford it) i saw an older chap (40,s) and he was a very nice chap and gave no impressions of what he thought of me. He was very good at his job and i left a deposit with him for my GMT master ii, since then i have bought 3 watches from them and know me by my first name as soon as i walk in. When i went to buy the second (Omega 2255.80.00) the younger chap was a different person and very polite this time, he was wearing a Breitling chronomat 44 which i said was very nice, he replied it was only a loaner from the shop to wear and was NOT allowed to take it home (this made me feel happy) due his snobby approach from my first visit. Each time i pop in now i get offered tea, coffee and biscuits and the staff are fantastically helpful, the girls are very chatty and ask me about my collection & what's next. My 3rd experience was the Longines Legend diver and was offered a very nice discount. (I took it of course) Impressions can be changed, but should not need to be. Sales assistants/shop staff should realise that any person/customer/window shopper is potentially a life customer. Off to take a look at number 4 next week (Omega Speedmaster 323.30.40.40.04.001) A large discount will be welcomed. I'm sorry that you and your friends had a bad experience. I've always been treated extremely well by all the dealers and staff in and around Bond Street and that includes when I was a teenager. I've always shown them enthusiasm for their stock and have made it clear from the onset that I was not buying today. Bond Street is brilliant to window shop and to compare pricing. The ironic thing is that, I have never bought a watch from a dealer in Bond Street despite their reciprocal enthusiasm. The reason I haven't bought a watch there is that I have formed a friendship with a local dealer who looks after my interests at what I consider a fair price. And by the way I have never dressed up to buy a watch. Hoping that in future you have a much better experience as buying a watch can be so rewarding. Shop in my home town I often go in to have a look at the watches these include Rolex, IWC all the usual suspects. Staff there are spot on and go out of their way to be helpful. That being said, I was wearing a suit at the time and I suppose the staff have got to know me now but looking around I saw a few regular customers in casual dress and the staff didn't seem too bothered to help them either. I guess they are more interested in making a sale than how people dress which is frankly just good business. Especially as in the New Year I intend to go back and pick up a Rolex datejust from them. robert75 Senior Forumgod   Posts: 1691 Joined: Fri Nov 18, 2011 10:03 pm Location: The frozen north CW-watches: 2 Top Reply with quote Re: Watch snobs by vietvet68 » Sat Aug 24, 2013 5:31 pm

Had a similar experience in Chicago and the salesperson acted as if I was bothering him. I tried on about 5 watches and he ask if I was test driving. I replied I test drove my car before I bought it and it is more expensive than the 7K watch I was looking at. I then took out the 8K I had in my pocket and counted it out in front of him and told him to get the manager. The manager came over and ask what was wrong I should him the money and said ask your salesman and walked out. I went back the following week and showed they my new Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600 M Co-axial GMT 43.5 mm. and ask the salesperson how much he could have made. vietvet68 Junior   Posts: 34 Joined: Tue Mar 12, 2013 10:43 pm Location: Chicago, Illinois USA CW-watches: 0 Top Reply with quote Re: Watch snobs by spacebrother » Sat Aug 24, 2013 5:56 pm

This is one of the reasons I really hate window shopping at Selfridges, the majority of the shop assistants have a "if you're not going to buy anything then get out of my face" attitude. I remember when I went watch shopping with my father in law and he is THE pickiest shopper I have ever know, but the assistants at Ernest Jones were a blast, they were patient with his outrageous questions ("Can you show me how waterproof this watch is? Can I have this watch but with that strap? Can I get a discount on this?") and eventually he left a happy person with a brand new Raymond Weil Freelancer. Both times, he was unshaven and dressed in well-worn jeans and an equally worn shirt. Nothing to distinguish him at all. And yet, he could buy up the entire contents of any one watch dealer from petty cash. Long story short, in London you dismiss and disrespect the scruffily dressed shopper at your own risk... Never had a problem, always pop up London on my off days. Harrods let me wear £300,000 watches despite the fact they know my budget stretches to 1.5k. I always wear jeans, jumper and trainers. Go to Wemp (nicest attendant i ever spoke to), go to Austin Kaye (My fav pre owned store by a long way, 2 year garauntee, try on about 5 watches everytime i go), Go to selfridges, i never get the feeling of being looked down upon, im nice to them and they are nice to me - especially when i let loose the knowledge, they make you feel even more welcome. Ditto. I find that most if not all the dealers, sales assistants I have met in London stores are glad to share their enthusiasm with a like minded customer even in the knowledge that I'm not buying. They always have time for me, it's not as if the place is teaming with people ready to part with tens of thousands of pounds. Just thought I would throw in Goldsmiths to this mix. Really helpful staff who are more than happy to help and I always get offered a coffee whenever I go in and look for a watch. Last time I purchased from them it was for an inexpensive watch and while I was there thought I would try on a few Omega watches. Staff were happy to even show me a couple of 24k watches, hand me his card if I needed any help in the future. I am sure any store can have he odd idiot working for them but my experience has generally been good. robert75 Senior Forumgod   Posts: 1691 Joined: Fri Nov 18, 2011 10:03 pm Location: The frozen north CW-watches: 2 Top Post a reply 43 posts • Page 1 of 3 • 1 , 2 , 3
